About Mr Larry Lunn…..Millgarth

A brief history of my involvement in Staffords.

Introduced to and around the breed in the late 1940’s (by a cousin the late Harry Folkes (Salken) owner, later, of “CH. Buninyong Caesar” it was not until 1953, against advice, that I obtained my  first bitch. Showing her with very little success.

In 1959 I purchased “Weycombe Benny” and with my father, Bill, coming
into partnership with me we campaigned him to his title gaining 14 Reserve C.Cs. along the way!.

Our Affix/ Prefix “Millgarth” was registered in 1961 and in February of that year I experienced my biggest thrill by taking the Dog C.C. at Crufts under Jimmie Russ (Relyon).    During the ‘60’s we bred a couple of litters and exported to the U.S. a dog who became “Am./Can. CH. Millgarth Powerpack CD. Ex.” which I understand had quite an influence there.      Also around this time we bred a good bitch “We Wonder at M.” but she , unfortunately, died young without issue.

From1970 until around ‘77/’78 I had to curtail my involvement somewhat due to family commitment but still kept a dog  and later, in the ’80’s, I purchased a bitch puppy out of “CH. Black Tusker” from Malcolm Boam.       This bitch produced a very good dog “M. Jack Cracker” who did a lot of winning early on and a number of people thought he could go all the way but too much exercise too young stopped him reaching his full potential. I bred a couple of litters along this Line during the ‘80’s.

In the early ‘90’s I obtained a daughter of  “CH. Rocellio Rip Van Winkle” from Roger Pugh which was shown by my daughter with some success and later from another bitch from this line I bred a lovely bitch who hated showing( and other dogs).  To my dismay was speyed after letting her go on breeding terms. However I still have the mother today aged 13.

As you might see I have bred but rarely ( 8-10 litters total ) and only when I’ve wanted something for myself. Type, health and temperament being my main aims.

I was persuaded to judge in 1990 having declined many invites over the years and to my surprise I enjoyed it and have since judged all over The U.K. at General Canine, Breed Club and Championship Show levels.    I have no colour preferences or bias where dogs are concerned and am only interested in promoting good sound stock.

I have been Vice Chairman of the Southern Counties Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society for the last 3 years and a member of the committee  for a number of years and have also stewarded at all levels.
